Monday, my birthday, began early, it was my first real "Day back" to work at the Hollywood house. The packing frenzy caused such a mess, I almost didn't know where to start. But start I did, and just worked hard.
In the afternoon, I saw a neighbor who I asked if Bulk Pick up had already happened last week. He said no. So I called up the City and found out I needed to have my bulk garbage curbside that same evening. So 3:30pm, and I started Hacking at old grungy carpet, cutting it, shredding it by hand, or just rip/tearing it up. Then I rolled it tightly, and even tied it just to make sure it'd be nicer for the guys to garbage it.
While doing the carpeting tearing up, A guy in an old pick up truck came by, saw the front door open (for the lovely breezes I get) and asked if I had any Steel or Aluminum type things, old appliances, even small ones, so he could recycle them. Lo and behold, I remembered the pile of steel pipes in the back yard, also gave him the very dead bicycle still in the screen room. This guy saved me a LOT of work, and I'm happy he'll get some money for it.
Yeah it was hard work on my birthday, but it was satisfying to know I now wouldn't have to spend like 100 dollars getting a special pick up, as normally you're not allowed to throw away rugs, only on bulk day, once a month.
Tuesday was time to check out the Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. I wanted some tiles to fix the counter top, of the counter the former owners added. Currently its CDX (Outside grade) plywood, 3 feet by 2 feet, with a fake back splash... painted white, likely with outside paint, as its the only thing they had that used white flat paint. I stored things on it, never used it for food.
But as I have at the house, one of those Blond pine wood tables with the white tile in the center, along with a matching microwave cart, I figured white tile of the same kind would/should be a huge improvement. The kitchen is just a bit over 8 by 9 feet, and the main counter top (with a large stainless steel sink in it) is only 66 inches across (by the standard 2 feet depth), so this additional 33 inches is needed.
So spent almost 3 hours there, OMG I measured everything, I might even have found a new bathroom sink top, slightly used, that is like dark granite or other dark natural stone. I'm so hoping that one fits, and I can find an under mount sink to fit it. They have cheap blinds, in so many sizes, now I need a measure of all the windows, probably also the picture window and the sliding glass doors.
So I thought the tile was like 30 cents each or something... nope I was wrong it was 50 cents a square foot. So 3.00 for my tile, 3 bucks for a large quart (looks more like two quarts) of adhesive & Grout in one. Got a professional floor scraper (for a dollar!) that I need to get some nasty dried tar like stuff off the Terrazzo floor that was hiding under the ookey carpeting. Got a very nice 3 spot light fixture for 15 there, very nice, I'd say European feel to it, its heavy and strong and well made, and nice matte black.
Thursday was more a lot more work, more garbage picked up, and when that hurt, I started sweeping Walls & ceilings and thresholds, and the car port. And then I started working again on the bathroom, and took the old toilet seat off, and took it back to Home Depot, as it came with a life time warranty. I got turned down by the supervisor but told I could come back tomorrow to speak to the Manager.
I found and bought some nice yet inexpensive new light fixtures for the 3 rooms, and the hall way, new fixtures for the nearly dead 3 on the outside the house, and a new ceramic bulb holder for the laundry room. I also got the spacers and the trowel I need for the Tiling project. I got a paint tray, and new 8 inch blade for my new dollar scraper.
Tomorrow (Saturday) my electrician friend comes by to work on all the electric issues and install all my fixtures. One room's light switch... well the fixture flickers, and I tried 2 other bulbs, so its the line, and flickering could be arcing, so taped that one OFF. Hall light, if left on, begins to make "Warm/Hot" smell, like something is cooking the wiring. And the bathroom light, has the only plug in the bathroom, up in the light switch and its NOT grounded. He'll see about either installing a full plug set where the wall switch is, or replace the fixture with basically the same thing, if we can't get a proper wall outlet out of it.
Today was Free Paint from the City of Hollywood day, I got Beige, it should work out OK. Now I need to pressure clean, and then seal it, then paint it. I also have some paint from the Re-Store I can use in at least one or two of the bedrooms, and the living room. I'm going to be a busy bee.
So lots of work, I'll do the tiling tomorrow too. Gotta clean more of the kitchen as well, do a bit more sorting of stuff for SCA give aways, and probably toss more trash out, etc. So thats where I am now. Oh and
